Exotics

Valley Exotics, our dedicated exotics service, runs from our veterinary hospital in Gwaelod y Garth.

The service is led by Dr Tariq Abou-Zahr BVSc CertAVP(ZooMed) DipECZM(Avian) MRCVS, an RCVS and EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Zoological Medicine (Avian).

As an RCVS specialist, Tariq has been recognised by the RCVS for the additional qualifications and outstanding work he has completed within his chosen field of exotic veterinary medicine.

Our vets are members of organisations such as the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, as well as the British Veterinary Zoological Society.

All this goes to show that when you bring your exotic pet in to see us, you can trust that they will be cared for by highly knowledgeable team members with a true passion for exotic pet care.

Facilities for exotic pets

We have a range of facilities specifically for exotic pets, rabbits, birds and reptiles, including dedicated wards for birds and reptiles, small mammals and exotic isolation cases.

Our separate upstairs waiting area, away from any barking dogs, minimises stress in what are often prey species.

We also have a separate ward for wildlife, meaning these animals will be kept completely separate from your exotic pets.

The small mammal ward in our exotic department features walk-in kennels for rabbit inpatients, as well as smaller kennels for pets who may need more space.

We also have a dedicated preparation room and operating theatre, a fully stocked pharmacy and a variety of in-house diagnostic equipment, including our CT scanner, in-house laboratory and x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy equipment.

Exceptional rabbit care

Our practice has been awarded gold status by the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund

We are very proud to have been the first practice in Wales to achieve this accolade!

Inpatient care for exotic pets

Hospitalised inpatients are looked after overnight by our 24/7 emergency veterinary team, who follow plans put in place by the exotic team.

Exotic referrals

Our exotics team are happy to see referral cases from other veterinary practices.
