WORK has started on a new £2million state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in South Wales.

Valley Vets’ new showpiece hospital in Gwaelod Y Garth, near Cardiff, will be the most high-tech facility of its kind in Wales and will lead to the creation of up to 20 jobs.

The practice plans to transform an empty warehouse into a two-storey veterinary hospital, providing 24-hour care, seven days a week, with an out-of-hours service.

The conversion work is being carried out by EDS Construction Limited, a specialist veterinary contracting firm based in the Midlands, and is expected to be completed in July.

The new hospital, which will serve Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, the South Wales Valleys and Newport, will be named Valley Veterinary Hospital.

It will boast 11 consult rooms, a hydrotherapy and physiotherapy unit, four operating theatres, dental suite, CT scanner, two x-ray suites, a dedicated exotics clinic and separate cat and dog waiting rooms, consulting rooms and wards. There will also be parking for 20 vehicles.

Valley Vets is part of UK veterinary group, VetPartners, which is funding the project.

Once opened, Valley Veterinary Hospital will be looking to employ up to 20 new vets, nurses, receptionists, admin staff and cleaners.

The project is being overseen by Mark Evans, VetPartners Business Development Director for South Wales.

Mr Evans said: “Valley Veterinary Hospital is going to be a highly prestigious facility that will be the pride of Wales.

“The facilities and high-tech equipment will exceed anything currently offered in Wales, enabling us to provide an exceptional level of care to all our patients.

“It will markedly improve the quality of work life for all our team, but especially for out-of-hours staff because of the extra support and better facilities available. As well as taking referrals in medicine and surgery from other veterinary practices during the day, we will do first opinion work and offer emergency care 24/7.

“Clients will benefit from excellent road links and the new hospital is in a prominent position close to a well-known local landmark, Castell Coch.”

The hospital will boast the first CT scanner and first in-house physiotherapist for cats and dogs in Wales.

Valley Vets joined VetPartners in 2016, a year after joining forces with the Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service (V.E.T.S). The practice has four sites in Cardiff, Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly and Pentyrch.
