Endoscopy
Our flexible video endoscope are very useful in investigation of the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The endoscope can be passed through the mouth to directly visualise the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small bowel or can be passed through the rectum to investigate the large bowel. Unlike in humans, the veterinary patient is always anaesthetised.
The endoscope can sometimes be used to solve the problem directly (eg) in the removal of a foreign body from the stomach, but more often are used to collect biopsy samples which can advance the diagnosis.
